Cagliari Calcio was founded in 1920 and is based in Cagliari, the capital of the island of Sardinia, playing its home matches at the Unipol Domus. The club's defining achievement is the 1969-70 Serie A title, the first Scudetto ever won by a club from south of Rome, driven by legendary forward Gigi Riva. Cagliari have otherwise spent their history between Serie A and Serie B, winning the latter in 2015-16 along with several lower-division titles.
